Marriages Are Earthly

Marriages are made in heaven
may be divorce too is heaven ordained.
But only here on this earth of palaces
primrose gardens and tinsel glitter
hands are held tight to Vedic chants
by indifferent priests in bad Sanskrit.

Marriage is a license to play games
of body and mind in routine stance
home, children, cooking and accounts
make the couple sad, happy and mad
loud voices, mouth, I-Me, Yours- Mine
she sulks, he returns drunk,
children wail and turn bear and bull.

Home turns hell when mom overspends
or Pop is seen with another,
marriage vows are broken
roof collapses on the empty rooms.
What is marriage without love
and love without freedom?
True minds and pure hearts collide
they coalesce with dignity as one.

Marriages in heaven's register are
account books, love is not  the seal
It is man who loves woman as heaven
woman is splendour for man's soul.
Man and woman create heaven
when love seals them together.

Everyday Is A Women's Day

Prafulla Kumar Mohanty

Everyday is Women's day, Yes International ,Universal, Cosmic, however you name it. Woman is the first manifestation of life in almost  all myths. Even in the Genesis, the woman is  in man, the thirteenth rib, came out by divine surgery. The earth is The Woman, gives birth to life, sustains it and becomes the stage for its Lila. Woman brings man on the earth, mankind is woman's creation despite man's shenanigans. Woman holds the family together, makes the home liveable. She gives the joy of beauty and love. She sends the man to the battlefield, she sends man to conquer the Everest, swim oceans and explore the space. In the Sankhya philosophy she is the Prakriti, man's  allhadini shakti , the regulatory energy as Radha was to Krishna.

I know you will raise your eyebrows, call me old fashioned. But who has defined woman? We men have defined her position. We thought beauty, delicacy and lithe grace cannot hack ferocious animals, cannot fell trees, cannot do business, cannot enter the entangled web of the market system, cannot fly a fighter jet, cannot kill enemies-she can only clean the floors and kitchen , give birth to children and take care of their upbringing. She is weak and hence should be protected. In the marriage vows man is to protect the woman, feed her and provide for her. Strangely she was never thought of as a celibate. Celibacy was man's monopoly and even for that man needed her companionship. If her shadow falls on a celibate saint the saint will be desiccated. All rules of behaviour, social etiquette were made by men and she was not allowed to sing, dance or read. Many saw her as distraction for she is a temptress.

But all those ideas and rules are now changed. The woman is now everywhere on earth and sky. She mothers the ailing men in hospitals as nurse, she puts the steatho on man's chest as doctor, she wields the scalpel as surgeon, she drives auto and heavy vehicles, she parajumps and works behind enemy lines, she spies in enemy territory, she invents, creates new designs, fashion's the men's world, writes poetry and fiction, anchors  debates and programmes, commands parades, reigns as the head of a state, judges, advocates, performs diplomatic functions and over and above all male functions she bears children which man can never do.

The woman was denied her rightful place in the human order. Now she has claimed her rights by her intelligence and fighting spirit. Woman was always a womb and her rights, if any, were given by men. Mothers taught their  daughters to eat after everyone late, to serve the elders  and take care of the younger ones. Today the parenting has changed. The girl child is no more an unwanted economic curse. Mothers now speak a different language. They are now trained, taught and counselled to be free, brave and pursue their aspirations.

But now the woman has disappeared! That is she is not at 'home' under a veil. She is everywhere participating in all human activities. Those who say the woman has disappeared, are not men only. In the lower middle class families the mother in law always had a role to play that is to order around the daughter in law. These households have missed a free servant. The working women today are self confident. They supplement the family income and at the same time serve the society. Of course the home- workplace situation exists but when a women opts for work she would definitely solve the  accompanying problems. Her will power and  self- belief however get shocks when she gets waylaid  and some drunken men rape her. This problem exists in India and elsewhere in the world despite laws and social alertness. This clearly means that the male order has not changed the mindset. The woman is meant for pleasure and it does not matter  if it is by force. Despite  advance of civilization respect for women is not in the value code of men. In the Muslim countries the woman now is beginning to find her voice.

Women's Day is an official recognition of women's rights as human beings. But the male population should shake off the earlier prejudicial ideas. Women today are well educated in all disciplines of knowledge. In any Board or University examination they are the toppers. They are everywhere but under the protective care of the States. per their due. They are half of mankind yet they are shown 'mercy' by the male world by giving grudging concession  in several areas of life. They are not free to operate in society as per their wishes. They suppress very often their ambitions because of family pressure.  They sacrifice their careers for the family which is sad and unacceptable. In America since 1776 no woman has ever become President. Men never allow their free minds to flourish. But the women are now penetrating and breaking the glass ceiling by their own hard work and intelligence. In the sports field,  Defence territory they are making their presence felt. But now that kind of 'exclusively for women' attitude should change. General inequality has now been  mostly a thing of the past. Why then men's cricket and  women's cricket? If we think the woman Minister is as capable as any man a footballer too should be equally capable to serve her country. If such things do not happen women will always remain as the other sex protected by the Original. No Almighty God of any religious faith is a woman. Hence although she is now free , her fetters have not been removed.

But women should be women not wear men's pants

The Mid Point

Pain  comes in perspective
pleasure in measured dose
I have seen floods and drought
I have no regrets in mixing them
like sweet and sour  dishes
at the high table of life.

Was it pain that made me
insane to hold on to the
memories and bleed
like an unstitched wound
I could neither realize then
nor get an answer
the echoes of pain are
now chocked and there
is no way out.

Pleasure is now a beautiful
and compact boon  that
makes me sing laugh and dance
rejoicing the thirst of sweetness
from earth to heaven.

Whose tale shall I say
pleasure or pain
yesterday they were mine
and today  they are
inseparable
and interminable
debate of life.

Does Religion teach Violence!

Prafulla Kumar Mohanty
The debate goes on. Violence goes on. The earth absorbs  all blood. Be it Christian, or Muslim or Hindu, the earth gets a red hue, puddles of red dry out in the sun. The earth gets back her original colour to be reddened again by man's violent orgies against man. Who induces man to kill who are natural mortals? Is it faith in one god that is intolerant of other gods? Is it political intolerance of rival ideologies or man enjoys killing for sadistic pleasure? He beheads animals without batting an eyelid. Kings and heroes kill with riotous pleasure in the name of royal hunting expeditions. Kill for revenge the innocent family of an enemy and call it vengeance. They kill for honour, whatever it means. Moral, honour, revenge, pleasure and even heroic temper and momentary fame are enough to eliminate another fellow man without the compunction of  conscience. But these killings do not always involve groups. Single combat or just murder is committed for personal reasons. Jealousy too is a provocateur for killing. Politicisations of jealousy is often noticed in history. Julius Caesar, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi were  victims of political hate and jealousy. Indira Gandhi was killed for revenge. And Mahatma Gandhi was eliminated for contrarian ideology. But how to explain the massacre that followed   the partition of India? How could neighbours kill neighbours? How could Sunnies kill Shias? Hindus the dalits? And to cap it all how could the Islamic state devastate the entire population of Mosul?

The  questions are endless . The history of man is the history of bloodshed. Alexander killed for heroic honour. Wars are always fought for some interest personal, social or religious. War is the last choice - says everyone but wars are fought. Krishna in the Mahabharata tried to broker peace but failed for ego and lust for power supersede all logic, moral, political or survival- the opposition or the  object of hate must be removed from the earth otherwise life and living are worthless. But why should someone kill in the name of religion?  All religions teach love , amity, harmony and mutual tolerance which is next to love in human value hierarchy. Love between two persons too is not tolerated if the lovers have different faith or race, caste or ideology . Christ and Gandhi  loved man much to the chagrin of fellow man. They were sacrificed for man's perpetuation of hate. Poets always  glorify love as the greatest  human value.  All religious thinkers and prophets preach love but love is the first casualty in group conflicts, particularly in religious conflicts. All of them sing " Majhab nehin sikhata apas me bair rahkana" but the song is for entertainment of an audience, never a charter of faith for practice. Gandhi's  Iswar- Allah never became the name of everyone's God.  The world today is divided by gods - be it the middle east, Srilanka, Newzealand or our very own India.

After partition about 4 crore muslims opted to live in India. We are today , after 72 years of freedom and independent rule 20 crore Muslims and 100+ crore Hindus. We have grown in numbers but we have, it seems grown apart. Communal tension increases moment by moment . The country that is India or Bharat does not matter. Bharat Mata ki  Jai is a militant slogan  according to one of the erstwhile Primeministers . Jai Sriram is a War cry. We are not Indians, we do not have a common inheritance of either history or civilizational attributes. Language, dress, faith and  cultural practices separate us from each other. We never agree on anything that speaks of India. We have   a Hindu narrative of India, muslim India and also  dalit India. The political bosses of the first fifty years of Independence and democratic governance never gave us one India. Secularism could  not unite the communal elements and each group developed its own view or definition of secularism. India is not one family of Indians  although the message on our Parliament Entrance is "The World is One Family".

The protest which now divides the country today is not political, it is at heart religious. The fire stokers who are in the background say Jinnah wali Azadi, or cut off chicken's neck and isolate Assam. The response from others is Golimaro. And on the eve of Trump visit the golis were actually fired. The carnage from either side took  away 53 lives and wounded 300. And even after the mutual fatricide recriminations ring out everywhere. The Parliament ceases to function , the foreign powers and media cry foul and people who are right thinking are silent . The right thinking man is a coward. The gods of the two communities are non-existent but their followers bray for blood. I feel like singing - Majhab Hi Sikhata Apas me Bair karna- Its Religions which teach us hatred , It's faith which sends one to kill his neighbour, it's faith that alone creates  discord. Can this strife ever end? But who wants to end it? If the sane people believe in the efficacy of the logic of existence they should not pray - " The Indian constitution replaces, the Gita, Quran  and the Bible, hence should be withdrawn from circulation". We are Indians , human beings and our faith is in the article of  the Constitution. The rest is private, personal and unworthy of public recognition

The Power of Love

This is Love's banished kingdom
hate drips blood everywhere
seasons have turned turtle
summer in terror hides in winter
the clouds rain fear on wet land.

The innocents are demeaned and killed
by drunken brutes on highways and homes
virtue cowers under authority, honesty pales
Hate the emperor reigns everywhere.

Christ came as Saviour , we nailed him
Gandhi said God is Love, Love is Truth
we emptied bullets on his praying heart
who will forgive our crimes who redeem!

Only God's love can save us
this power terror can be tamed
by the one balm on all wounds.

O' Man love is in your soul
open it for one and all
don't wait for tomorrow
time is already sealed
break it with your love
Peace and God will return to earth.

Spectacle And Shadow (Trump's India Visit)

PrafullaKumar Mohanty

Modi -Trump bonhomie  was in display at the largest stadium in the world  Motera in Ahmadabad, as the grandest spectacle of friendship between the oldest and most powerful democracy in the world and the most populous democracy, India for the world to see. Donald Trump the temperamental and transactional President of America was not short of vocabulary to praise his  friend Narendra Modi and Modi in turn was not short of adjectives  to elevate Trump to a divinity. The 22 kms road from the Airport to the stadium was lined up thickly by Indian admirers with flags and festoons chanting Namaste to the variety of Indian rhythms of song and dance. The 125 thousand audience in the stadium and the billions of  T.V viewers were enchanted by inspiring words by the two world leaders. Trump spoke all that India wanted to hear  and Modi struck the right notes of reciprocation. America, said Trump, is the most loyal and faithful friend of India which was music to Indian ears, poison to Pakistani's and astounding to the ears of the rest of the world. The politics ,business and strategic partnership apart the six hugs of the two world leaders fused several batteries in the world especially those of Pakistan and China. The message was clear: India and America will change the destiny of the world and move towards universal peace , harmony and prosperity with open arms. Both will fight Islamic terror. Both will build time defying bridges of human good will. Milania Trump was dressed in all white and a red sash symbolising as it were the purity of human vitality. The maddening cheers of the crowd sent waves of joy in the air to echo in heaven.

Yes, it was a spectacle. But the sincerity and love behind the effort to make the spectacle unique were also genuine.Trump, therefore, flew to Agra, another  tribute to love, grace, beauty and harmony from Motera to wallow in man's eternal celebration of love. Trump was so charmed that the next day at hotel Maurya , he refused to fall into the trap of hostile journalists when they raised India's protest against the Citizenship Amendment  Act and the Kashmir  imbroglio. Trump proved a trusted friend, a mature politician  and also a true human being.

But behind the spectacle, the story, the five agreements  and the win win  deal and festivities the fire of hate was simmering in India. The Saheen bag protest against CAA, NRC ( as yet not finalised) and the hundred odd mini Saheen bags elsewhere in India, a strategic experiment to create disharmony seized upon this great opportunity to cast an evil shadow on the grand spectacle.  All the districts of North -East Delhi erupted in  hate for India's basic principle of unity in diversity. For the past 70 odd days the Rastaroko protests holding the Constitution and the Indian Tricolour were a stage for hate speeches communally charged and hostile to all Indian values.  Apparently Saheen bag is a spontaneous protest, leaderless and peaceful. But to get highlighted by International Press while Trump was in India, the protesters became religious fanatics and indulged in pelting stones, firing bullets and also in arson and looting, thereby making Delhi's glory gory. The pro CAA protesters of other communities added to the gore and fire of shame. Delhi and India lost 43 citizens. The police force couldn't anticipate the sinister designs of the Anti and Pro CAA groups  and lost their credibility. For 48 hours the smoke of fire of mutual hate which was more religious than legal or constitutional, cast its malign shadow on India's triumphant moment of glory.

Trumps and company flew back on the Air Force One, the special Presidential plane: Delhi burned in hellish sulphur of religious hate. No one in India savours the spectacle of the trump visit everyone in worrisome glance looks at the future. The hiatus that has been created may take decades to fill up. The wounds will fester and the healing process will take a long time. But who gained what? The conspiracy to defame Modi and Shah may have succeeded but poor fellows do not perhaps understand the citizenship for which these people were feuding is now totally worthless. What is the meaning of citizenship where the citizens themselves blacken the country of their 'birth' with clouds of bellowing smoke? The spectacle has no  meaning for these people for they prefer the Shadow to draw their knives against one another. It now needs a Gandhi to heal the wounds in the country that Gandhi freed with Love, truth and non-violence.

Enemy

Prafulla Kumar Mohanty

I have often wondered about the word  enemy, especially the meanings, interpretations and uses of the word. If someone is a vegetarian he is the enemy of the beefeater; the temple goer and the mosque goer are enemies of the church goer; the mountain dwellers, treetop dwellers are the enemies of the plains, the Kali bhakts and the Durga bhakts are enemies and a Tamil speaker is an enemy of a Hindi speaker: the list is endless. But what really bowls me over is the war scene, the battle field where enemies face each other for mutual destruction. How is the soldier on the other side my enemy? If I am a patriot fighting for my country the soldier facing me is a patriot of a different country, yet we call each other enemy and kill. The Tiger is not our enemy yet we kill the tiger. The deer is not our enemy yet we kill to eat it. A tired soldier calls a flute player nincompoop and asks him to stop because he is fighting to protect him.  I hate a person because of his complexion, ideas, dress, language, food habits even the size of his house. Gandhiji was killed because he wanted the Hindus and Muslims to live together. The victor, the successful man are seen by the failures and the defeated with enemical eyes....

So what is this enmity? I fear the tiger, the soldier on the other side, the more successful corporate entrepreneur, a true lover, a powerful politician and think ill of them. Is it only fear of losing your self- glorified importance? Jealousy, rivalry, psychological inferiority also give rise to the feelings of antagonism. If the wife becomes famous as a dancer, her engineer husband gets jealous and entertains  ideas of divorce. If a politician becomes popular his rivals lose sleep and plot for his fall. If a lover is devoted and poetically elevates his love to divine heights, the beloved shrinks and protests trying to bring him down to the mundane levels of physicality or turns into stony unresponsiveness. If a mother is possessive the daughter revolts. If someone is honest and truthful he is friendless. People spread canards only against honest and hardworking men. If a country gets rich, neighbouring countries conspire with richer and stronger countries to block its progress.

In the mythologies too we see enmity which is irrational . Vishnu has his enemies, the gods too fight between themselves for ego or jealousy.  The sages meditating in the forest are attacked by the demons. Ram the apostle of virtue kills to protect others. Krishna in the name of saving the noble Pandavas causes the destruction of a  civilization. Family Quarrels continue beyond generations. For Rama's love Hanuman kills people who are in no way connected with his life. In history we have evidence of kings killing men and animals for mere entertainment. A man is asked to fight a lion for public fun; the people clap and cheer when the king's lion kills a brave fighter. Who is the enemy in these cases?  Mountains of a country never consider mountains of another country as enemy. But man attacks the other country. America sanctions smaller and weaker countries  when they  refuse to accept the supremacy of America. China treats India as enemy as it aspires to be the most powerful in the area. India and Pakistan are sworn enemies for no reason at all. Strangely your enemy's enemy is  a friend and enemies friend is your enemy. Turkey and Malaysia are India's enemies as they are Pakistan's friends. Why ? What logic can explain this idea of enemy/ enmity?

Perhaps  there is nothing called logic acceptable to Man for all time. Today's friend is tomorrow's enemy. Mutual suspicion in political relationship, business, religion and even  Marriage / Love is the only logic which motivates man and explains his enmity. Suspicion is the result of not only trust deficit but also the fear of extinction. We kill the tiger out of the instinct of fear and after killing we are proud of our achievement. Man is perhaps the only creature who is easily jealous, intolerant, unaccommodative and uncompromising. He hates almost everything that distracts him from his self conscious ego.  Hubris is built into human nature and everyman plays God in his life. Hence if his godhood is challenged, or mocked at or ignored he pushes himself to the brink to prove his godhood. If  he is destroyed because of his silly self pandering logic he does not care. He defies defeat and prepares himself for revenge. He cannot perhaps tolerate heights which make him look up. He must stare down at everything.

D. H. Lawrence famously said , "Tell me how many enemies you have  and I will tell you how great you are" fine,  for only  a great man has enemies, a minor man is always ignored. But why don't people gather around a great man in celebration of human greatness? No, that's not in a man's DNA. If he is too weak  he will throw expletives to the lonely walls  or dream of fighting lions like Santiago. But he will never accept greatness of body , mind, imagination and inventiveness for it makes him a beneficiary not the benefactor in the society. We hate the hand that feeds and gets  inside our weak minds. All this is true because man is not capable of true love. And we have to accept this bitter truth with humility.
